If you read "Educated," and/or "The Glass Castle," and were moved by the ability of a woman to rise above despair solely by grit and determination, then please add this memoir to your reading list. Her journey through periods of starvation that led to dumpster diving for discarded food, and a childhood of horrible emotional abuse and physical violence is both heart wrenching and inspirational. Where one might become jaded, bitter and mistrustful, readers follow along in this memoir and celebrate as the author makes hard choices that lead to a life of joy, acceptance, and abundance. Caveat: I was a witness to a portion of the events in this book. Reading details of the years prior to my entry into the author's life were beyond difficult. Knowing that she triumphed over a childhood of pain brings me the utmost happiness. I am not a big reader I do a lot of audibles. I finished this book in one day.(first time I've ever done that) It is a true story of child abuse seen through the child's eyes and thoughts. I felt like I was on the journey with this feisty little girl, and I couldn't put it down because the author Teresa Van Woy ( the little girl) wrote it in such away that you feel love and care for this little warrior. The book is mainly about her childhood journey, but you know from the beginning that she dreams for more, and uses her imagination to set goals and envision how her adult life will be different. She never accepts that this her lot in life, she is always looking to the future, knowing that in the future she can take control of her own life. I would love a sequel to take us through her college years and the inner journey she must have had to take as an adult to heal, and create this book and her now normal family life.
